If Michael Schumacher didn't exist, probably no one in the world would be able to put Kerpen on the map. But Schumacher is, was and hopefully will be - only the city government, which doesn't want to grant him honorary citizenship, should understand that.
The matter is not new, experts and fans have been trying for a long time by various means to win this recognition for the seven-time world champion. However, in vain… Local politics have once again taken a stance as if it were a Christmas surprise, and they could not have done it in a more disgusting way:
"There is no honorary council in Kerpen. The establishment of an honorary council and the associated honorary citizenship is fully within the competence of the city council," said Mayor Dieter Spürck on this matter.
"On March 19, 2024, the city unanimously decided to postpone the issue of granting honorary citizenship to Michael Schumacher. The factions and independent members must first vote among the factions on whether we will introduce such a title. Since then, no application has been received on this matter." - explained the "first" person of Kerpen, whose colleagues further spiced it up with statements such as "it currently makes no sense" and "where does honorary citizenship begin and where does it end"...
We don't want to comment on all of this, you already know our opinion.
