It has been known for some time that Zandvoort, and with it the Netherlands, will soon leave the F1 circuit. There will be two more Grands Prix held at this track and then... Then, after initial hesitation, Assen announced that it would like to take over the baton!
But the situation is not simple. Europe and the true traditions of Formula 1 mean less and less to the current management of the racing circus, (unfortunately) despite Arjan Bos, the president of the Assen circuit, indicating that they would like to be partners in the rotating system that F1 has invented (which is terrible, by the way).
"Of course, it is our big dream to bring Formula 1 to Assen. I think when you invest so much money in the track and you also enjoy the support of the spectators, then - if possible - we must definitely try it. That is exactly what we are doing and we are very positive about the possibility. We will carefully review what is needed to be able to bid, but it is not yet possible to say that Zandvoort is leaving and Assen is coming."
"We have to remain cautious. I don't know, we'll see if F1 really wants this race. I would also like to hear Zandvoort's arguments about why they are stopping, and I don't know Formula 1's ideas regarding the Netherlands. We know that they want fewer European races and that they are thinking about Africa and India. We also have to take these aspects into account," Bos mused.
